Carpets and rugs (Teppich Hochflor) are used all over the world, and have strong links to a number of different cultures and traditions. While there are literally hundreds of different cultures who have produced carpets and rugs throughout human history, some of them have become especially well known for their carpet making skills.
The most famous types of traditional carpets include Chinese carpets, Turkish carpets, Persian carpets, Armenian carpets, Indian carpets, Pakistani carpets, French carpets, Spanish carpets, Turkmen carpets, and English carpets. While each of these styles are authentic and unique from each other in many ways, they share similarities in the way they have captured the attention of the world.

Some of the most famous rug making cultures in the world include China, India, Pakistan, Morocco, Iran, France, Spain, and England. While each of these cultures is responsible for making very different types of rugs and carpets, all of their creations have spread around the world through international trade. Chinese carpets, like a lot of traditional Chinese products, were woven exclusively for internal consumption. Because of this, it was not until the first half of the 19th century that Chinese carpets began to become known all around the world. In contrast to this, Turkish carpets became famous in the 15th and 16th centuries through their illustration in a number of famous European paintings. Indian carpets are quite distinct, and are well known for their high density of knotting. While the art of carpet weaving is said to have originate in India in about 1500 A.D, it was not until the 16th century that their carpets spread through the Middle East and into Europe.

Pakistani carpet culture is linked in many ways to the Indian tradition, although they have a number of their own rich traditions that have seen the production of a number of famous carpet designs and techniques. In contrast to these areas of Asia and the Middle East, there is also a strong culture of carpet manufacture and design in many European countries, especially England, France, and Spain. In many ways, these European nations were influenced by carpets from around the world, although their creations have evolved towards something very different indeed.
